Without displeasure, we found this one (the large decorative composition) in the fifteen canvases intended by Pierre Girieud for the University of Poitiers: it is for the Greece of the sages and the gods, for this permanent image, which goes beyond we the ephemeral world, that the painter friend of the Hellenic landscapes of our beautiful Provence asked for his austere inspiration : Right is Lycurgus and the Spartan Oath; the Letters, Homer among the shepherds; Medicine, the statue of Aesculapius in Epidaurus; the Sciences, Pythagoras and his school: a fine effort, which deserved to be encouraged by the happy initiative of Mr. François-Poncet, since he glorifies classical culture in the service of French thought! Here we are far from our decadents. .....
