I pointed out at the time, the illustrated edition of Flaubert, that on the occasion of the centenary of the master of Croisset, publishes the Libraire de France. (...) The compositions of Girieud for La Tentation are recommended by an abundance in the form and solidity of the unusual drawing. All the pompous and magnificent disorder of the anchorite's visions is aroused in landscapes with a happiness that owes nothing to chance. Master of white and black, in fact the most subtle processes of his art, he knows how to scratch copper and distribute aqua-tint, and the engravings in two states that he shows us are very significant on this point. The manner in which Girieud treats the feminine nude has something very harsh, very deliberate, which seduces by its reasoned force, without, however, giving up the charms of grace. (...)
